Wonder why your general dentist in Phoenix talks about health so much?
Why we emphasize preventive dentistry like cleanings, professional dental hygiene, or Fluoride treatments?
Why we try to get you to come see us at least twice a year for checkups?
Oral health and overall health are closely linked. They just can’t be separated!
- When your body is unhealthy, it often shows up in your mouth – and who knows your mouth better than your Phoenix general dentist?
- When you are stressed, ill, or on certain medications, it can have a damaging effect on your smile – and who can recognize that damage better than your smile specialist?
- When infection and inflammation are present in your teeth or gums, it can lead to serious maladies like:
- Immune-system compromise
- Atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries
- Heart attacks
- Pregnancy complications
- Worsening diabetes
- Joint replacement failure
And doctors are even beginning to see links between gum disease and Alzheimer’s. Clearly, when your Phoenix general dentist says, “Prevention is the best medicine,” he means it!

It’s why from cleanings and checkups to emergencies, our Phoenix friends and neighbors trust us for general dentistry that goes above and beyond the norm.
Exams are general dentistry in Phoenix’s best and most effective preventive measures. Your team at Diazo Family Dental & Braces starts your first visit with the most comprehensive exam you could imagine and continue that comprehensive approach through your history with us. We will admit that the first exam is probably the most time consuming, but that’s a good thing! That first exam is the baseline against which we compare all other exams, so we want to be sure we don’t miss a single thing. We start by discussing your oral and health history. Then we:
- Check your soft tissue for any sign of inflammation
- Measure your gum pockets and examine for early signs of periodontal disease
- Screen for oral cancer
- Examine your teeth for even the smallest cavity
- Look for any signs of wear or breakage
- Examine and evaluate your head, neck, and jaw structure
- Inspect for early, oral signs of overall health issues
- Check for signs of sleep apnea or TMJ disorder
But you are more than just a set of teeth to us, so we also take time to talk to you as a person, getting to know and understand your concerns, fears, and hopes. If it has been a while since your last x-rays, we may take a complete set of digital x-rays, again, as a baseline for all future exams. If we find any problems or the beginning signs of trouble, we will create a treatment plan to bring you back to health. But we aren’t dictators. We always work with you to tailor the plan to meet your physical, financial, and scheduling needs. You and your smile are special — and we go out of our way to prove it! Back To Overview
Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer screenings are part of our comprehensive exam. But they are so important, we also do them at every hygiene visit as well. Why? Oral cancer can begin very quietly, with very few distinct symptoms. Those subtle beginnings may be why so many cases of oral cancer become fatal. The Oral Cancer Foundation estimated that about 9,750 individuals died from oral cancer in 2019 out of approximately 53,000 Americans who were diagnosed. Some of oral cancer’s early symptoms can be confused for a simple lesion or sore – and considering how easy it is to bite your cheek or cut your tongue or gums, it’s understandable that those symptoms can be overlooked. If you have any of the following symptoms in your mouth, call us right away:
- Painful sores
- A patch that lasts for more than a few weeks
- Frequent bleeding
- Loose teeth or dentures that don’t fit correctly
- Difficulty opening your mouth
- Pain or difficulty with swallowing
We’ll see you as soon as possible. It could save your life! Back To Overview
Dental x-rays really are amazing. They allow us to see what we can’t see with the naked eye, even in the most comprehensive exam. With x-rays, we can look below your dental enamel and tissue and discover problems that are hiding below the surface. Unfortunately, not all dental x-rays are the same. The older, traditional dental x-rays use film that must be developed and then physically stored. Plus they expose our Phoenix general dentistry patients to far more radiation than we like. That’s why we have invested in digital x-ray technology. The benefits of all-digital x-rays include:
- More comfortable for patients of all ages
- Much lower exposure to radiation – about 80% less
- Clearer, brighter images
- Digital storage
- Easy comparison from visit to visit
- No paper or chemicals for development required
- More environmentally friendly
Plus, because digital x-rays are viewed on a computer screen instead of a lightbox, we can zoom in to take a look at even the most subtle problem areas and treat issues before they develop into major problems. It’s just another way we invest in you – you’re worth it! Back To Overview
Mmmmm…that delightful feeling you have when you walk out of your Phoenix general dental office with a mouth full of newly cleaned teeth! There really isn’t anything like it! We love it too. Our doctor and our hygienists do such a fantastic job, not only of cleaning your teeth and gums of all the junk and gunk that builds up on, around, and under them, but of doing it gently and comfortably as well. We use the Cavitron ultrasonic cleaner to remove every trace of plaque and tartar. What makes ultrasonic cleaning so gentle and effective is that it uses sound waves to remove even the toughest tartar from both above and below the gum line, without scraping.
So why is hygiene so important – other than the fact that it makes your teeth feel great? Bacteria! Plaque is a sticky substance that bacteria live in. While they are there, going about their bacterial business, they excrete acids. Those acids attack your teeth and cause cavities. Worse, if plaque is not fully removed, it hardens into tartar or calculus, a hard crust that only your Phoenix general dentist can remove. This crust builds up both on your teeth and under your gums and can lead to gum recession and infection. Clearly, dental cleanings and hygiene visits with Diazo Family Dental & Braces is a win-win situation. Your smile looks and feels terrific and your smile’s health is protected from harm. What could be better? Back To Overview
It happens. We get too tired to brush and floss before bed. We eat a few too many sugary snacks. We skip our regular professional cleanings and suddenly things don’t look so great in your mouth. Your gums might be bleeding a bit when you brush. There’s a little extra sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets. And those happy, pink gums are looking way too red and inflamed for comfort. It’s time to admit it: You have a gum infection.
Gum infections or periodontal disease are nothing to ignore. Not only do gum infections cause recession, bleeding, and tooth loss, they can also have a grave effect on your overall well-being. Gum disease has been linked to all kinds of illness including strokes, heart disease, and cancer.
If we find signs of gum disease, we will treat it with a stepped-up cleaning schedule to remove every bit of tartar and infection. Before you know it, your gums will be back in the pink and your smile feeling ready to take on the world. Back To Overview
Everyone has heard of Fluoride and realizes that they need it in their toothpaste. But why? What makes Fluoride so important? Every day, every minute, your teeth are exposed to threats. From the things you eat to clenching and grinding from stress, your enamel is under attack. Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that strengthens and protects teeth by “remineralizing” enamel. What’s more, when used properly, it can also boost the remineralizing qualities of your own saliva! According to the American Dental Association, “When you eat things like candy, crackers, or noodles, cavity-causing bacteria start feasting on the carbohydrates in these foods. This produces acids that attack your enamel. It causes calcium and phosphate to be stripped from the tooth enamel, leaving you more vulnerable to decay and cavities…However, saliva disrupts the attack as it coats your teeth and adds back calcium and phosphate to replace what had been stripped away. Once in your enamel, fluoride teams up with calcium and phosphate there to create the most powerful defense system your teeth can have to prevent cavities from forming: fluorapatite.”
Your Phoenix general dentist, Dr. Lucas Brimley, suggests supplementing your kids’ teeth with this important tooth protectant at every visit. But Fluoride isn’t just for kids. If your teeth need a little extra protection, talk to us about professional Fluoride care for adults! Back To Overview
Protecting your teeth and preventing dental issues is one of the biggest benefits of general dentistry in Phoenix. It’s why we focus so much on exams, cleanings, and Fluoride. It’s also why we protect your smile on a day-to-day basis with custom-made mouthguards.
Sports Mouthguards – If you or your children are involved in sports or other physical activities, please ask us about our comfortable sports guards. It’s important! According to the American Dental Association, “The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF) forecast that more than 3 million teeth would be knocked out in youth sporting events. They also reported that athletes who don’t wear mouthguards are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth.”
Sure, boil-and-bite sports guards are available at sporting goods stores, but they don’t offer protection equal to dentist-made, custom guards. In fact, some studies even suggest that wearing the wrong kind of mouthguard can cause your child more harm than wearing no mouthguard at all! A recent Science Daily article reports, “High school football players wearing store-bought, over-the-counter mouthguards were more than twice as likely to suffer mild traumatic brain injuries/concussions than those wearing custom-made, properly fitted mouthguards… Researchers suggest that when it comes to buying a mouthguard, parents who want to reduce their child’s risk of a sports-related concussion should visit a dentist instead of a sporting goods store.”
Don’t risk your child’s – or your own – health. Talk to us about how we can help you fit a custom mouthguard into your budget.
Nightguards – Clenching, grinding, biting. All of those things can happen unconsciously when you are stressed or sleeping, and they can take a major toll on your teeth. If we see any signs of cracking, wear, gum abfractions, or other signs of bruxism, we will probably recommend a nightguard. Though they are called nightguards, bruxism guards from your Phoenix general dentist are custom made to fit your mouth perfectly and comfortably while you sleep – or any other time you might clench your teeth – protecting them from damage. In some cases, they can even help relieve the pain of TMJ disorder, especially if it is related to grinding and clenching. Back To Overview
